Anthropic's Fable Model Returns with Cybersecurity Classifiers
What happened
Anthropic's Fable model has been restored for worldwide access as of July 1st, following a temporary US government-imposed export control initiated on June 12th. The updated Fable 5 now includes a cybersecurity classifier that redirects risky requests to the previous Opus 4.8 version.
Why it matters
AI developers and teams deploying frontier models should expect continued ad hoc government oversight and evolving compliance requirements, as demonstrated by the Fable incident, which can lead to swift, restrictive actions.
