From Intention to Text: AI-Supported Goal Setting in Academic Writing
Summary
WriteFlow is an AI voice-based writing assistant designed to support reflective academic writing by facilitating goal-oriented interaction. Developed as a Google Docs add-on, WriteFlow addresses the common challenge writers face in articulating and managing evolving goals, a gap not fully covered by existing AI writing tools focused on efficiency. A formative study with 17 participants informed its co-design, leading to five requirements including facilitating goal articulation and preserving writer voice. A Wizard-of-Oz study with 12 expert users, primarily from Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), demonstrated that WriteFlow scaffolds metacognitive regulation and reflection-in-action. It achieves this by supporting iterative goal refinement, maintaining goal–text alignment during drafting, and prompting evaluation of goal fulfillment, thereby enhancing writer agency and critical engagement with AI feedback.
Key takeaway
For AI Engineers developing writing assistants, you should focus on integrating dynamic goal-setting and monitoring features that explicitly support metacognitive processes. Ensure your system allows for iterative goal refinement and provides transparent, multi-perspective feedback to empower users, rather than simply generating text. This approach will foster greater writer agency and critical engagement, moving beyond efficiency-focused tools to support deeper learning and reflection in academic contexts.
